Xam’d: Lost Memories

Xam'd: Lost Memories

One part studio Ghibli and one part Eureka Seven, Xam’d is a different entry into the mecha genre. In the world of Xam’d, the mechs are living things evolved from people (aptly called Human Forms). That’s right. The pilot is the mech.

Xam’d begins on quiet Sentan Island. The island is cut off from the war between the Northern Government and the Southern Continent Free Zone…until the first episode anyway. Enter Akiyuki, a teenager from a strained family, and his friends Haru and Furuichi. Their school bus explodes in a terrorist attack and a strange light shrapnels into Akiyuki’s arm. Moments later he transforms into a large white creature (mech) called a Xam’d and rampages through the city fighting creatures dropped onto the island by Southern government. He is stopped by a mysterious girl called Nakiami who helps him return to his human form. She offers him an ultimatum: come with ...

Strain: Strategic Armored Infantry

Strain: Strategic Armored Infantry

Strain is a mecha anime without all the religious pretenses. In the distant future ( over 7000 ce), humans have colonized large swaths of the local galaxy. Divided into 2 warring factions, the Union and the Deague, humans continue their long experiment with empire. Humans appear to be alone in the universe so far…

Sara Werec is a Reasoner, a pilot of mecha called Strains. Her elder brother, Ralph, is a legend and a traitor.

Strain follows Sara as she tries to unravel exactly why her brother betrayed the Union and herself. Most of the story takes place around an Academy vessel that trains Reasoners and regular pilots.

Strain feels more like a high school anime than a standard mecha. The academy is divided into various cliques: namely Reasoners and Gambee pilots. Sara is caught between the 2 groups as she struggles to come to terms with her brother’s betrayal. She hides her ...

Evangelion: 2.22 You Can (Not) Advance

Evangelion: 2.22 You Can (Not) Advance

Evangelion 2.22  picks up where Evangelion 1.0 leaves off…but not with another rehashed scene from the original series. Thankfully 2.0 has very few of those compared to the first film. You Can (Not) Advance kept me…dare I say?…riveted.

Like Eva 1.0 You Can (Not) Advance continues the story from the original series, only it does it properly. Most of this OVA is new stuff: new scenes,  characters, and designs.  Shinji even stops his wrist cutting and acts more normally. His father, Gendo, also displays his human side. Gendo severely lacked any type of humanity in the original series. Here, he is a father who is forced to choose between those he cares about and the greater good.

Eva 2.22  grabs you by the throat by opening with a spectacular fight between Mari Makinami (a new character) and the remains of the Third Angel. The pace of the film continues at a comfortable ...

Evangelion 1.01 You are (Not) Alone

Evangelion 1.01 You are (Not) Alone

I didn’t really care for the original Evangelion series. It was just too pretentous, and the characters rubbed me the wrong way. Shinji in particular was a whiny wrist cutter who made me want him to just go “up the street.” So, when I heard Evangelion was releasing an OVA series I was hesitant to watch it.

I was actually surprised.  In fact, I must say, You are (Not) Alone is pretty good. Shinji still grates on my nerves, but with the faster pacing I can actually tolerate it and even see his character develop better than in the series. The story just works better in this shorter format.

You are (Not) Alone opens with Shinji being called to NERV headquarters by his father just as an Angel attacks. Angels are aliens bent on the destruction of humanity. Shinji is forced to pilot the last hope of humanity: the Eva. Mind you, ...

RahXephon

RahXephon

Blue blood and genetics are the only way to tell who is human and who is not. Called Mulians, these are the invaders the conflict of RahXephon centers around. In the beginning of RahXephon, Ayato Kamina is a modest 17-year-old living in Tokyo. He is an average student, who enjoys painting and spending time with his classmates Hiroko Asahina and Mamoru Torigai. He has affectionate relationship with his mother, strained by her long-hour work. During the sudden attack on Tokyo, Ayato hears the singing of his classmate Reika Mishima. She leads him to a giant egg containing the RahXephon. Haruka Shitow, an agent of the defense research agency brings Ayato and the RahXephon to their headquarters.

Like most mecha, Ayato and his RahXephon are unique instruments in the conflict with invaders. Unlike other series, mechas in RahXephon are made of clay; much like the golems of Jewish folklore. Full of action, ...
